Gardens have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. For more than 30 years, I’ve worked as a professional gardener, learning from the seasons, the soil and the many gardens placed in my care.
Along the way, I’ve discovered that gardening is never truly finished. There is always something new to notice: a plant thriving in an unexpected corner, the first signs of spring, a clever idea worth trying or a familiar task made easier with a little know-how.
Gardening by Sarah Coles grew from a wish to share those discoveries—and to celebrate the simple, lasting joy of tending a garden.
Practical gardening, shared with care
I’m a qualified gardener, but I believe good gardening advice should feel helpful rather than complicated. You won’t find rules for creating a “perfect” garden here. Instead, you’ll find friendly guidance, practical ideas and encouragement to help you make the most of the space you have.
Whether you’re wondering what to plant, how to tackle a seasonal job or where to begin with a tired border, my quick how-to guides will help you take the next step with confidence.
I’ll also explore changing gardening trends, separating the genuinely useful ideas from those that may not stand the test of time. After three decades of working with gardens, I know that the best approach is often a thoughtful balance of fresh inspiration and time-honoured practice.
Gardening with nature
A garden can be beautiful, useful and welcoming to wildlife all at once.
Sustainable gardening lies at the heart of this website. Together, we’ll look at achievable ways to care for the soil, save water, reduce waste and choose plants that will flourish without unnecessary intervention. There will be ideas for composting, peat-free growing, wildlife-friendly planting and making thoughtful use of the materials already around us.
Sustainability needn’t mean transforming everything overnight. Small changes, made steadily and with care, can create a healthier and more resilient garden.
Gardens to visit and ideas to bring home
Few things are more inspiring than stepping through a garden gate and seeing how someone else has brought a place to life.
My garden reviews will visit gardens large and small, looking beyond the grand views to discover the details that make each one special. A beautiful planting combination, a well-placed seat or a clever way of working with shade can all provide ideas to try at home.
These reviews will be honest, thoughtful and written with a gardener’s eye—celebrating not only how a garden looks, but how it feels and what we can learn from it.
A comfortable corner for gardeners
Above all, I want Gardening by Sarah Coles to feel like a really good, comfortable book: a place you can return to with a cup of tea, spend a little time among plants and leave feeling inspired.
You might have a large country garden, a small town terrace, an allotment or just a few pots by the door. You might be an experienced gardener or taking your first tentative steps. Whatever you grow and wherever you grow it, you’re very welcome here.
Gardening is full of possibility, but it is also wonderfully forgiving. Plants can be moved, plans can change and every season offers another chance to begin.
So pull on your gardening gloves, step outside and let’s see what we can grow.
